Book a Holiday Through a Travel Agent to Avoid Being Stranded

Since the beginning of the year, most of us were looking forward to enjoying our 2 weeks summer holiday abroad. However, following the 19th September 2008 crash of one of Britain's largest travel companies, XL Leisure thousands of us were left stranded across European, Caribbean and African airports.

XL Air which is a subsidiary of the large travel group XL Leisure, had been put into administration causing their holiday heartbroken travellers to seek alternative flights while being hit with huge air fares and hotel bills because of delays of more than a week in getting home.

Out of the 90,000, only 63,000 of the stranded passengers were on package holidays, and so were covered by the ATOL bond (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing Bond). This scheme ensured that package holiday travelers would be repaid for their hard-earned losses. As a result British tour operators had to rebook those passengers on alternate carriers at no extra cost.

However, the remaining passengers who had booked direct, and were not ATOL-protected, had to arrange their own flights home. Some people outrageously paid 500 for each family member in order to return home to the UK on top of any accommodation costs they had to pay while shipwrecked.

For example, in a case where one paid for a flight and didn't even travel on the first leg of the trip due to the airline company going down.

Remember your priorities when booking your holiday!
