Save Gas - Lighten Up!

103 64
Lighten up.
Not you.
Your Car!Empty your trunk and save gas and save money! Still carrying the summer camping gear in the trunk? What do you need barbells back there for? Do you really golf every day? If you are not using it everyday, you probably don't need it in your trunk! (Or back seat, either!) Clean out your gear and see how many pounds you lose from your car.
Once you get rid of all that extra baggage and remove the bike rack you no longer use, you might save as much as 5 cents per gallon just by lightening the load in your car.
Now THERE is a good reason to clean that trunk! Even the Department of Energy thinks it is a good idea! Another tip for you from the DOE is to look further ahead and avoid some of the traffic stops and starts, try to maintain a more steady speed.
So what is the real story on tire pressure?Look at the side of the tire to find out what it is supposed to be.
Ignore the listing in the user manual and on the side of the door that is just to keep you comfortable, it does not help you save gas.
It is true that if your tire pressure is low, you will use more gas.
If the tire pressure is too high it reduces traction, so just keep it near the higher end but not over inflated if you want to save gas and not have safety risks added.
So what about putting nitrogen into your tires to improve your miles per gallon? That is not a good idea.
You still need to pay attention and check your tire pressure weekly.
Our air is already 72% nitrogen, so unless you are driving a race car or an airplane it really is not that critical.
It is okay to add it if it comes as a free service, but it is not a way to save gas or save money at all.
That's a scam.
When you see a hill ahead, start to accelerate before you get to it not while you're on it.
One good way to waste gas is to keep your car in low gear and drive fast! You will use about 45% more gas than you need.
Remember Uncle Edgar's advice to start out slow and then shift gears as you increase your speed if you want to treat your engine right and save gas.
That is also a good way to save money! Sometimes you have a relative that lives on a lousy road, but if you can avoid bad roads, do it.
Dirt or gravel roads eat up about 30% of your gas mileage.
But that is probably not a good excuse for avoiding the in-laws!
