How to Make an Anti-Sag Gate
- 1). Cut two 2-inch by 4-inch boards the height you want the gate. Keep in mind that the gate needs a ground clearance of at least 2 inches to ensure it swings easily over the ground, grass and any other surface obstacles. Use a power saw to cut the boards.
- 2). Cut two more boards to the width you need the gate. This is the width of the opening minus 2 inches. The gap is to allow for the hinges on one side of the gate and clearance for the gate to swing open and clear the fence.
- 3). Place the height boards parallel to each other and lay the top and bottom boards across them so that the corners overlap.
- 4). Drill 2 1/2-inch screws through the corners where the boards meet. Insert 4 screws into each corner.
- 5). Measure in between the top and bottom board at an angle. Cut a board to fit the diagonal from the top of one side to the bottom of the other side in the space between the top and bottom boards. Use a circular saw that adjusts to make 45-degree miter cuts.
- 6). Fit the diagonal board over the side boards of the gate in between the top and bottom boards. Attach the diagonal support to the side boards of the gate with 2 1/2-inch screws. The cross support keeps the frame from shifting or sagging.
- 7). Attach whatever planks you want over the frame. Drill screws through the planks and into the top and bottom boards.
- 8). Attach hinges to one side of the gate. To help keep the gate from sagging, use at least 3 hinges. Use the hardware that comes with the hinges.
- 9). Lift the gate and attach the other side of the hinges to the fence post. Use a level to ensure it is straight before screwing the hardware into the post.
