Installing Light Fixture Wiring

    • 1). Turn off the circuit breaker for the room you are working in.

    • 2). Set up a ladder under the fixture. Touch a non-contact voltage tester to the wires coming from the ceiling using the probes. Do not touch any bare copper wire with your hands. If the wires still have power, as indicated by a light on the voltage meter, check the circuit breaker you turned off was the right one.

    • 3). Strip off a 1/2 inch of plastic from the ends of the white neutral wire and the black hot wire using a wire stripper.

    • 4). Attach the mounting bracket for the light fixture up on the ceiling using the screws provided.

    • 5). Connect the black wire and white wire coming from the ceiling to the same colored wires coming from the light using wire nuts. Place the wire nut over the exposed ends of the two wires and twist the cap clockwise.

    • 6). Attach the bare copper wire from the electrical box to the green grounding wire coming from the light. This prevents shorts. If there isn't a copper grounding wire you will need to install one. Loosen the grounding screw in the electrical box, located somewhere in the middle. Cut a piece of copper wire using wire cutters and wrap the end of the copper wire around the screw. Tighten down the screw.

    • 7). Mount the light to the bracket as indicated in the installation instructions for the light.
