Building a Garden Studio in 5 Easy Steps

103 28
Garden studio installation is a popular way to increase living space without the expense of moving house.
A fashionable way to trade up or expand your new build plans in something special and exciting.
Suitable for any purpose, from secret spa rooms to garden office workspaces and easily adapted to exceed building regulations for thermal efficiency and carbon ratings.
What does the consumer need to do to plan their studio build?
  1. Budget.
Decide what you can afford and how you will finance the project.
Your budget will dictate the quality of room you can achieve.
Target internet advertising garden studio companies whose products fall close to your limit.
In competitive times, their prices may be flexible.
  2. Time frame.
Lead times for studios can vary considerably throughout the year.
Still a seasonal purchase, December and January are traditionally quietest months where lead times can reduce to 1 or 2 weeks after order placement.
That means your studio could be delivered in just 1 week.
The busy months are curtailed by manufacturers' workloads and lead times can increase to 8 weeks from order to delivery.
  3. Design.
Consider the best place to position a studio on your property and the additional costs involved if it is at a distance from the services.
Electricity connection, water and waste may be needed.
Orientate your glazing to suit your purpose.
South facing glass can induce a mini greenhouse effect in summer, leaving your room difficult to cool.
North facing glass captures the most auspicious light for artists.
Think about how the studio will look from your home and how your garden or house will appear from the studio.
  4. Quotes and flexibility.
Companies will often send you a quotation for your project - this is the final price for the specified work.
However, they may also offer parts of the work on an estimate deal, such as plumbing.
This price could rise considerably during the course of your build so is not a fixed price quotation.
Try to finalise the price with the company and keep a copy of your email correspondence.
Once you agree a fixed price for the work, it is tricky to change your mind so be sure about the design, style, finish and materials before work begins.
Changing your mind is likely to incur extra costs with all companies.
  5. Guarantees.
The best construction industry guarantee is a 10 year insurance backed warranty.
Some companies offer 5 years and others offer only their own company guarantee.
I'm afraid the latter is void if the company folds.
An insurance backed deal protects the consumer against this eventuality.
Manufacturers' guarantees may be offered on individual materials such as the roofing finish (20 years in some cases) but this does not transfer to the structure or workmanship of the entire studio.
