Dog Behavior - Rolling in Smelly Stuff
Dogs and people have different opinions on what smells good and bad.
Have you noticed when you try to give your dog a bath with scented shampoo that she really doesn't seem to enjoy the pretty smell as much as you do? Your dog may smell wonderful to you, but to your dog the smell may be disgusting.
Some dogs may rub on the furniture, or rub their noses with their paws.
Anything to get the smell off.
Some may even try to find a scent they like better to roll in...
Many dogs enjoy smells that, to us, are disgusting.
Poop, animal carcasses, and garbage may attract your dog.
There are many theories about why dogs roll in smelly things, but the most popular theory is that the dogs are trying to replace a scent they don't like.
This could include shampoo, perfume, etc.
It's important to realize and remember that a dog's sense of smell is much more sensitive then ours.
Dogs smell things stronger then we do, so the scented shampoos are a constant smell on their body that they do not enjoy.
Some preventions: 1) You might keep her on a leash so that she can't roll in smelly stuff.
2) Pick up all poop in your yard and around your house.
3) Make sure there are no animal carcasses anywhere in your yard.
4) Lock up all garbage.
Obedience training may be another great way to help your dog get away from this bad and gross habit.
