Social Networking Can Kill Your Business! - AKA the Myth of Multi-Tasking

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last couple of years you probably understand the major shift that has occurred in marketing (and our lives) as a result of "Web 2.
0" and social networking websites.
Also, if you own a business you have no doubt heard time and time again how crucial it is to your marketing success to incorporate all of these tools into your advertising campaign.
However, I am here to tell you that using these tools can kill your business! OK - before you dismiss me as an uninformed nut, please let me explain.
Twitter, Facebook, various blog sites, etc.
, can be GREAT for many things such as creating low-cost or free traffic for your website or building your web presence, but the simple fact is that most people just try to do too much too soon and all at the same time, resulting in little productive or meaningful activity.
Time spent "working on your marketing" may instead turn into several wasted hours aimlessly browsing the internet.
Many experts have even demonstrated how "multi-tasking" is actually a myth - no such thing is possible.
This article will provide a brief common sense approach for how to incorporate some of these tools into your business in a way that is achievable for the average person.
With regard to multi-tasking, according to scientists, a more accurate definition may be "separate short interspersed chaotic events.
" You may be able to tell why that did not catch on a buzzword! The point though is that humans are not able to simultaneously focus on separate tasks.
So in reality, when you feel like you are accomplishing multiple things at the same time, you are actually having to continuously change and break your focus, and may ultimately achieve far less than just focusing on tasks one at a time.
Since our younger generation has been exposed to more technology, multimedia, gadgets and numerous other distractions, they may be more used to switching among several things at once.
However, they may still suffer from the halting, inefficient work style researchers have described.
In order to truly increase your efficiency, try reducing rather than adding to your task list.
As it relates to running a business, Web 2.
0 properties are merely tools.
Trying to multi-task between your normal business activities and several new social networking resources all at once may lead to frustration and ultimately prove detrimental to your productivity and results.
One of the great things about entrepreneurship is continually striving to improve, streamline and overhaul processes to reduce time and effort and increase profitability.
However, what many business owners tend to experience is that trying to add many tools into the mix is simply too much at once.
Taking the time to learn how to use them properly and appropriately while tracking the return on time invested is sometimes a full-time job in itself, or at least one requiring significant attention.
Consider focusing on just one new site, maybe Twitter, Facebook or another resource with which you feel comfortable.
Schedule time to learn how to implement the resource, while still meeting your other business objectives, and monitor your productivity relative to your time invested.
One suggestion is to spend no more than 30-60 minutes per day.
Once you have learned how to comfortably use that particular social networking tool, consider putting into action additional Web 2.
0 resources, one at a time.
Once you have developed the ability to benefit from these tools and still run a successful business, you may eventually enjoy the advantages that new technology provides, as opposed to adding to your workload.
