Pebble Beach Senior Services Cut Again : Bus Service This Time : View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving, Carmel, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas & Seaside, California

The Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) service announced on Friday that a hoped for rebound in the economy that would have boosted revenues has not appeared. Therefore, it's expecting a $1 million drop in federal and state fuel tax revenues and as a result, it will have to cut services. The 2011-2012 budget which was approved this week includes a number of reductions in frequencies across a wide array of routes. The $31.8 million budget which was approved for the fiscal year starting on July 1 is 8.3% less than the prior year. Changes to the bus routes won't actually start until September 1 after MST holds four public meetings on the topic to get feedback from the public. Of most interest to seniors will be the complete elimination of Line 7, which goes from Monterey to Carmel via Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. This is one of just two routes which is being shut down, the other being Line 26 which services Watsonville-Aromas. There are reductions in service to a number of lines including Line 43 to and from Salinas and Salinas-Valley Memorial Hospital and Line 46, which goes to and from Salinas and Natividad Hospital. This is another setback for seniors, who have been absorbing a huge amount of cuts at the state, federal and local levels. The latest is particularly disheartening because a large number of Clients at Family inHome Caregiving have had to either give up driving, or are in the process of having their family try and convince them to stop driving. Many are in their 80's and 90's, and some are healthy enough to get out and about but the Monterey Peninsula is so spread out that few homes are in walking distance of shops, parks and other areas of interest to seniors. Without bus service, the elderly remain more dependent on friends, families and services like Family inHome Caregiving to help get them around. We strive to allow seniors to remain in their own homes and independent, but it's very sad to see basic services like buses and adult day care centers lose their funding, which makes it much harder for seniors to remain in their own homes to live out their golden years.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to the elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
