How to Integrate a Podcast Into Your Blog
Though you may have a primary type of content, such as written content, adding other types of content will keep readers - and yourself - interested in your blog longer term.
A podcast is one type of content you can add to your blog.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to integrating a podcast on your blog.
1.
Install a podcasting plugin.
I personally use and recommend the PowerPress plugin by Blubrry.
This plugin is easy to use and has a lot of different options for customization.
2.
Set up a podcasting category in your WordPress blog.
A podcasting category is important because assigning the podcasting category to each post is what will make sure that all of the podcast episodes end up in the right RSS stream.
This will be important later, when you want to add your podcast to directories such as iTunes.
3.
Set up a Feedburner feed for the category you created in step 2.
This feed is what you'll submit to iTunes and other podcasting directories and is also what will enable people to subscribe to your podcast via RSS.
4.
Record your podcast episodes and upload them to your WordPress site.
Recording doesn't have to be a complicated thing.
You can use most any mic you have, but for increased sound quality, if you want to use a USB mic, I recommend the Yeti microphone.
If you want to keep costs down, I recommend using Audacity to edit your.
mp3 files since Audacity is free.
5.
Write show notes for each podcast episode.
Your show notes are a brief description of what the episode is about and also can include links to various things you mention during the podcast.
You might also want to have your podcast transcribed, save the transcript as a PDF, and upload it to your site as well so people can download it.
Podcasts are a great way to add a bit of variety to your blog.
One thing I love about them is that they don't necessarily have to be time consuming.
Just write a brief outline of what you want to cover in your episode, and then hit record.
Since you can speak faster than you can type, audio content can be a way to create blog posts faster, particularly if you have someone else do the transcription work.
