Texas is home to several highly ranked public universities, including two listed in the nation's top 65 by U.S. News & World Report. Many of Texas' public universities have their beginnings in the 19th century. These schools have continued to grow and evolve, and now offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs that can prepare students for further education or employment in almost any field. - The University of Texas at Austin was founded in 1883 and now functions as the University of Texas system's flagship school. As of 2009, it had about 38,100 undergraduates and 12,800 graduate students. The university comprises 18 different colleges and schools, including the undergraduate, graduate and continuing education schools, the schools of architecture, business, engineering, geosciences, information, law, nursing, public affairs and social work and the colleges of communication, education, fine arts, liberal arts, natural sciences and pharmacy. Undergraduates can choose from among 100 different majors. The Texas Longhorns compete in the Big 12 Conference and NCAA Division I athletics. The University of Texas at Austin tied for 47th in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.
