Sheaves of Wheat, 1890
About the Show:
Although the Van Gogh: Heartfelt Lines exhibition contains 50 of Vincent's oil paintings, its focus is on the ways in which he directly transcribed his draftsmanship skills into brushwork. An additional 100 graphic works and watercolors round out the show and, indeed, side-by-side comparisons between chalk or ink drawings and (subsequently) painted canvases show just how faithfully he followed his original, sketching hand with a brush.
Most good artists agree that drawing is the basis of great painting and here, then, is your proof.
Van Gogh: Heartfelt Lines was jointly organized by the Albertina, Vienna and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, and is the first van Gogh show in Austria for more than half a century. Over 60 lenders from around the globe contributed to this major exhibition, on view from September 5 through December 8, 2008 at the Albertina.
