Treating Depression - Your Road to Recovery

Society is slowly accepting that depression is a treatable illness and not a personal failing.
When you're depressed, however, it is hard to look at it in that light.
It's hard to look at anything positive.
Admitting that it exists is the first step on your road to recovery.
It may take a friend or family member to help you see the problem.
If so, listen to what they are telling you, as it could save your life.
This illness can be caused by many things.
The clinical and bipolar aspects are thought to be due to hormone imbalances.
Once those are taken care of, the symptoms will disappear.
You may be astonished at how good you feel, both physically and mentally.
Symptoms of depression include feelings of worthlessness, fatigue, hopelessness and insomnia.
You may get angry easily or cry for no apparent reason.
Sometimes there will be physical signs as well.
Poor digestion, weight gain or loss, headaches and pain that does not respond to pain medications are a few that may occur.
Events in your life may also trigger this problem.
The loss of a job, the death of a loved one and many other negative problems can cause it.
The treatments may be a bit different, but it can be aided.
Counseling: It probably won't be the only thing suggested by your doctor, but it may be part of the overall plan.
Even if it is caused by a hormone imbalance, low self esteem may be present.
A good counselor will be able to help you improve in this and other areas.
Hobbies: It may seem silly, but a new hobby could be a big help in this situation.
Choose something you have always wanted to do.
Maybe it's to build a model railroad, learn a new cooking style or take up roller blading.
Learning the ins and outs of the hobby gives your mind something to do and changes the pattern of your day.
Exercise: The last thing most depressed people want to do is exercise, but it should be among the first things.
Like the new hobby, it takes the mind off the problems for a while.
It also releases endorphins, the runner's high.
That can go a long way towards natural depression relief.
Diet: What you consume plays a big role in how you feel.
While we often reach for comfort foods in this sort of situation, they are exactly the wrong things to eat.
Foods high in fat, sodium, cholesterol and/or sugar can actually make the situation worse.
So can caffeine, so watch the coffee consumption.
On the other hands, bananas, turkey, mushrooms and eggplant could relieve some symptoms.
They contain an amino acid that may help improve hormone balances.
Herbal Remedies: Mild to moderate depression may respond well to St.
John's Wort.
Severe (sometimes called major) cases shouldn't be treated with it.
Those with bipolar should also avoid it, as it could make that condition worse.
5HTP and melatonin may also help.
Due to drug interactions, check with your doctor if you take any medications or other supplements.
Medications: Some types of depression will require medications.
There are several different types on the market.
Your doctor will help you find the right one for you.
Most of these medications should not be mixed with herbal remedies.
This problem is treatable.
It is very important that you are diagnosed properly and that you discuss treatment options with your doctor.
You may also want to consult a qualified herbal practitioner as well.
As a team, depression can be beaten.
