Energy Saving Tips for Mobile Homes
- Mobile homes are built in factories and transported by a tractor trailer to their intended location; they're designed to be moved again in the future. Because of their affordability and mobility, mobile homes are increasing in popularity each year. Mobile homes use a lot of energy; but by following energy-saving tips on a daily basis, mobile home owners can save energy and money while sparing the environment in the process.
- It's important to stay warm through the winter months. Some of the older mobile homes are not appropriately insulated. Mobile home owners should always seal any air leaks and furnace ducts so the furnace will turn on only when necessary, rather than running all of the time. Properly sealed leaks also prevent heat from escaping. The obvious places to seal are around doors, windows and outlets. However, identifying less obvious leaks is the only way to improve energy efficiency. Common leaks occur near chimneys, vents, water pipes, the heating system and the rodent barrier, which is found beneath the floor of the mobile home. For hard-to-find leaks, have a professional use a blower door to seek them out.
- Another energy-saving tip is to blow insulation into the belly, or underside, of the mobile home and into the roof. This adds protection from the elements, keeping the home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Installing interior storm windows is another energy-saving step, but professional help might be required depending on the construction of the mobile home.
- Have a professional check the furnace to ensure it's in proper working order. The filter in a forced air furnace should be replaced or cleaned each month. For mobile homes with baseboard heaters, clean the vents weekly and make sure furniture doesn't cover them. In addition, the furnace, stove and water heater in a mobile home should be serviced regularly. Do laundry only in full loads and in cold water, using cold water detergent, to conserve the most energy possible.
