    • Designed by Hewlett-Packard and sold in the early 2000s, the HP 5500N network printer was one of their top-of-the-line products. The HP 5500N was network-ready with the Embedded Web Server, the HP Jetdirect 615N Print Server EIO network card and an RJ-45 (Ethernet) network port. Its Fast Infrared Connection provided wireless communication with other computer accessories in the same room. The HP 5500N was Energy Star Compliant and automatically went into a power saver mode after sitting idle.

    Power Requirements

    • The HP 5500N 120-volt model printer drew 48 watts in powersaver mode and 592 watts while printing. The 240-volt model drew 44 watts in powersaver mode and 562 watts while printing. The suggested circuit amperages were 10.1 amperes and 5 amperes for the 120-volt model and the 240-volt model, respectively. Each model dissipated 174 to 181 BTUs of heat per hour.

    Toner Cartridges

    • The HP 5500N printed using combinations of four colors: cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y) and black (K). Each color has a separate cartridge (part number)--

      cyan (C9731A), magenta (C9733A), yellow (C9732) and black (C9730A). Other replaceable parts include the image fuser kit (C9735A for the 120-volt model; C9736A for the 240-volt model) and the image transfer kit (C9734A).

      The life expectancy (letter-size paper) for the color cartridges and black cartridge were 12,000 pages and 13,000 pages, respectively. The image transfer kit and image fuser kit lasted 120,000 and 150,000 pages, respectively.

    Hardware and Software

    • The HP 5500N came with 96 MB of RAM (memory). With three 168-pin DIMM slots, it was expandable to 384 MB. It had three Enhanced Input-Output (EIO) slots to connect other computer accessories. It also included a graphic LCD display panel.

      The software required at least a Pentium R microprocessor, 16-color/grayscale (VGA), 640 by 480-pixel resolution, and 93 MB of disk space for full installation. The memory requirements were the same as the operating system. The software functioned on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows XP 32-bit, Windows XP 64-bit, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 and Apple Mac OS 8.6 or above. Additional software included AutoCAD drivers versions 12 through 14 and Adobe Reader 5.0. The printer software required Internet Explorer 4.0 and above or Netscape Navigator 4.0 and above for updates.

    Paper Requirements

    • The HP 5500N used 16 lb. to 53 lb. bond paper. The smallest paper size was 3 inches by 5 inches; the maximum paper size was 12.3 inches by 18.5 inches. The printer had two feeder trays (100 sheets for tray 1, 500 sheets for tray 2) and a 250-sheet output bin. The HP 5500N printed 21 text-based pages per minute.

      The HP 5500N had room for two more 500-sheet feeder trays.

    Physical

    • The HP 5500N weighed 132 lbs. It operated between 56 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 27 degrees Celsius) and 10 percent to 70 percent humidity. Its dimensions measured 25.2 inches high by 27.7 inches deep by 22.7 inches wide. To facilitate parts replacement, it required a clearance of 37 inches high by 43 inches deep by 25 inches wide.
