Close your eyes and think about a sail.
What do you see? Wind, sunshine hitting the wide, open sea? Sails are the objects the move boats, they are what work together with the wind so that movement can occur and travel can take place.
But sails are for more than just travel.
They block sun; they navigate, run and rocket.
They represent something that comes into being.
Something that coasts and cruises.
1.
Windmills: A windmill is a machine that converts the energy of the wind into rotational energy by sails or blades.
Originally developed for milling grain for food production, windmills can also be used to pump water as well as a variety of other industrial functions.
The sails used in windmills are typically made of a lattice framework on which sailcloth is spread.
2.
Kites: A kite is a tethered aircraft.
It takes flight when air flows over and under its wings.
The pressure below and above it allows it to fly.
Typically, kites are heavier than air which is why they depend on it to fly.
There are however some kites that are filled with hydrogen, hot air, methane or helium, that can stay afloat without wind.
Kites can be flown for fun, recreational use, they can be used for sport- such as kite surfing and snow kiting, or even as an art form.
Aerial ballet kites can be very beautiful to watch.
3.
Hang gliders: Hang gliding is a sport in which a pilot flies a light, unmotorized aircraft called a hang-glider.
These aircraft can be launched by foot.
The wings of hang gliders tend to be made of fabric sails.
Before the modern technology there is now, hang-gliders had to sail down small hills.
Now they can fly for hours, fly upwards and even do aerobatics.
4.
Windsurfs: Windsurfing is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing with those of sailing.
The board is two to four metres long and is powered by the effect of the wind and sail.
Being small sailboats, windsurfers are able to do flips, perform jumps, spins, loops and other cool, freestyle moves.
A very fun and entertaining sport to watch, windsurfing takes a long time to get good at and requires a ton of upper body strength.
5.
Sails can also be used to block out the sun.
Shade sails are often seen on large public buildings and are a stylish way to keep the grounds and the people who spend time on them cool and comfortable.
