How to Place Vegetables in a Garden
- 1). Organize your seeds and plants by type. Keep families of plants together. Generally the same types of plants require the same kinds of fertilizer, soil, pesticides and water levels.
- 2). Set aside the plants that will grow the tallest, such as sunflowers and corn. Plant these on the northern side of your garden. This will prevent them from blocking too much sun, as being on the east and west would, and blocks cold, northern winds from hitting your more delicate plants.
- 3). Place leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and spinach, next to the tall plants. Leafy plants require less sun than other plants.
- 4). Place plants cultivated for fruit, rather than their leaves, farther away from tall plants, as they require the most sun.
- 5). Plant perennials along the edges of your garden so you can till the soil of your annuals without disturbing your perennial plants.
