102 54
How do you feel when a dialog box saying Restart your computer to finish installing important update pops up in the middle of an important work on the computer and asks to restart the computer? Frustrated, right? It is true that you can postpone the restart for up to four hours but the frustrating dialog box keeps reminding again and again and hampers your work before finally getting rebooted automatically in the midst of downloading an important file or preparing an important presentation for the business review meeting.

The quickest way of disabling the reboot for the ongoing session is to stop the running of Windows update. This can be done by opening a command prompt window in administrative mode. Go to the start menu search box and type in cmd with the use of Ctrl+Shift+Enter for opening the command line window in administrative mode. Alternatively, go to accessories menu and right click on the command line to select run asadministrator. Provide the administrative password, if any and open the command line window. Once you have reached the command prompt, type net stop windows update and press enter. The service will be stopped for the particular session until your computer restarts. There are more ways of disabling this behavior but you will still get the prompt which will not enforce the shutdown though.

This trick works in all the versions of Windows and you can always fall back on this temporary disabling measure.

You can also perform this activity by using registry hack. For this, open the regedit.exe through the search box of the start menu and navigate to the following key. If this does not exist, create a new key.

HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Policies\ Microsoft\ Windows\ WindowsUpdate\ AU

Here, produce a new 32 bit DWORD value with the name NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers and provide a value of 1 to it. It will prevent automatic reboot when the users are logged on. You can delete the value when you want to put the things back to their normal position. Its very important to know that hacking registry can be harmful for your computer and it needs to be done by experienced users. If you are in doubt, do not hesitate in asking for PC tech support.

The other and easiest way to disable auto reboot is downloading the registry hack. Here you just need to download & extract registry hack file and double click on WUNoAutoReboot.reg in order to disable the automatic reboot. The other script is used to remove the registry hack. Download the hack by clicking on howtogeek.com.

There is one more way of doing this. Here you do not have to play with the registry, just download a small utility by clicking on intelliadmin.com.This utility makes the necessary changes for you but you need to ensure you run this utility as an administrator in Windows Vista. This hack works well with all editions of Windows7, XP, Vista and even Windows server and you do not have to seek any computer support.
