How to Make a Padded Mosaic Headboard
- 1). Measure the height and width of an existing wooden headboard that fits behind your bed. You can find used headboards to recycle at local thrift stores or furniture-consignment stores. You can also have a 3/4-inch plywood panel cut to fit your desired headboard dimensions at your local lumber store.
- 2). Measure and mark the height and width of your headboard onto a section of 1- to 2-inch upholstery foam. You can obtain upholstery foam at your local fabric store. Cut the marked section of foam with an electric knife.
- 3). Lay the headboard or plywood face up on the floor. Spray a generous amount of adhesive over the face of the board and press the upholstery foam to the wood. Let the adhesive dry.
- 4). Lay the mosaic-style quilt face down on the floor. Many quilts are mosaics by design, so look for one that coordinates with the décor in your bedroom. The quilt should be large enough to cover the face and sides of the padded headboard, along with 4 to 6 inches of the backside. If your quilt is overly large, you can trim it before you attach it to the wooden headboard. If the quilt is just a bit too large, wait to trim off the excess until after you've attached it to the wood in Step 6.
- 5). Cut a section of batting to wrap around the headboard. Lay it on top of the quilt.
- 6). Center the padded headboard on top of the batting. Beginning at the center of the top edge, pull the quilt and the batting over the headboard. Staple the quilt and batting onto the backside. Work your way around the perimeter of the headboard, pulling the quilt and the batting over the edges and stapling them to the wood every half inch. Pull the quilt taut as you work. Fold the corners as if you were gift-wrapping a present, and staple them in place.
