Brooklyn observes African American History Month, which some call Black History Month, in many ways. School children do projects, families attend events at BAM, the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Children's Museum and Brooklyn Public Libraries, and bookstores feature relevant titles. In short, people in Brooklyn plan ahead for the event known both as Black History Month and African American History Month.

Many people read Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speeches and writings. Others get involved in community service projects.
