Homemade Wind Chime Using Brass Tubes
- Gather four to eight brass tubes, available from hardware stores in varying shapes and thicknesses. Ideally, the brass tubes should be about 1/8-inch thick. The thicker the tube, the quieter the sound. Test the sound by gently banging the tube against a wooden object; the sound becomes deeper the longer the tube gets. Choose tubes with a pleasing sound or cut them down to find the most desirable sounds for your wind chime. Create a circular wooden top and a wood "clapper" to strike the brass tubes. Make sure the wooden top's diameter is wide enough to accommodate the tubes hanging below. Choose thick nylon thread for hanging the tubes to the chime and a screw hook for securing the wind chime to a roof overhang.
- Slowly and methodically cut the brass tubes with a hacksaw to the desirable length. Cut one small piece at a time and test the sound of each tube. Create varying length to provide multiple sounds. Place the tubes in ascending order, with about an inch of space between each tube. Sand the edges of the tubes after cutting them so the nylon thread doesn't tear. Drill two small holes in the top of each brass tube for the nylon thread that attaches the tubes to the top.
- Drill holes through the circular wood top that are equally spaced apart. Attach the wood clapper with nylon thread in the center of the wooden top. Pull the nylon ends of thread attached to the brass tubes through the holes in the wooden top. Attach all of the nylon threads to the screw hook from which the wood chime will hang.
