Data Cabling Installation
- 1). Mount an RJ-45 wall jack on the wall nearest the spot for the computer and mount another one on the wall closest to the computer modem wired to your broadband provider.
- 2). Run a Cat-6 data cable along the walls or ceilings from one RJ-45 jack to the other but leave about 6 inches of extra cable at each end to allow for slack before cutting the cable with a pair of diagonal pliers. Attach the cable onto surfaces with cable staples spaced every foot along the route. Do not place the cable less than a foot beside power lines to avoid interference.
- 3). Remove 2 inches from the outer covering at both ends of the cable with wire strippers. Straighten out the twisted pairs of wires. Strip off 5/8-inch of insulation from the tip of each wire on both ends of the cable with the wire strippers. Remove the faceplate of each jack to expose the back of the RJ-45 keystone jack.
- 4). Examine the color-coded wiring scheme printed on each side of the RJ-45 keystone jack. There are two color-coded wiring schemes (T568A and T568B); you only need to choose one. The wiring scheme you will choose should be used on both ends of the data cable for proper data transmission.
- 5). Pry off the snap-on cover on top of the jack to expose eight slots that will accommodate each wire and sit the jack on a stable, flat surface. Place the wires on top of the jack parallel to its length with the RJ-45 jack's opening facing away from the wires and the Cat-6 cable sheath barely touching the edge (rear end) of the RJ-45 jack. Route each color-coded wire to its matching color-coded slot following the wiring scheme that you chose in Step 4.
- 6). Punch down each color-coded wire all the way to the bottom of its color-coded slot with the punch down tool supplied with the RJ-45 keystone jack. Cut away any excess wire on each side of the jack with the diagonal pliers. Replace the RJ-45 keystone jack's cover and plug the jack into its slot behind the faceplate. Mount the jack onto the wall outlet box.
- 7). Plug an RJ-45 patch cord into the network (RJ-45) port at the back of your computer and plug the other end into the RJ-45 jack on the wall beside the computer. Plug an RJ-45 patch cord into the RJ-45 port on your computer modem and plug the other end into the RJ-45 jack on the wall beside the modem. Turn on your computer and the computer modem. Browse the Internet to test the data cabling installation.
