How to Protect Myself From a Bully

104 24
    • 1). Stay away from the bully, if possible. If you do not allow the bully the opportunity to get to you, he cannot bother you. For example, if you know where the bully likes to eat his lunch everyday, make a point to spend your time far away from that area.

    • 2). Put on your most courageous face. Bullies often thrive on the idea of intimidating another person. However, if you do not make it known that you are scared, the satisfaction significantly reduces for the bully. This doesn't mean that you should provoke the bully, but simply that you should never act timid or nervous around him.

    • 3). Hang out with your friends. When bullies look for victims, they often seek out people who spend a lot of time alone. When a person is alone, he is a lot easier to harass. To protect yourself from a bully, make a point to be around people as often as possible, whether you are putting something in your locker, eating your lunch or waiting for a class to begin. Bullies tend to be cowards. If you're with other people, they'll probably stay away.

    • 4). Exude confidence. Work on your self-esteem. The better you feel about yourself, the less compelled a bully may feel to bother you. Get a start on enhancing your self-image by walking with your head held high and taking active steps for improving your life. Focus more on your schoolwork or take up a new hobby, such as swimming or learning to play piano.

    • 5). Confide in someone you trust. If you are feeling bullied, try not to keep the overwhelming feelings hidden. Reach out to another person, whether it is a parent, close friend, teacher or school counselor. Confiding in another person will assist you in gaining perspective, and also help you in figuring out new ways to approach and handle the situation.
