How Do I Mute Audio in a Video?

    • 1). Use the "Mute" button on your television set's remote control. This will disable the speakers on your television set, turning off all audio and leaving only video playing back on screen. Note that this will not work if your video source is connected to an audio/video receiver instead of being connected directly to your television.

    • 2). Use the "Mute" button on your audio/video receiver's remote control. If your video source is connected to a receiver for surround sound or for another reason, you will have to mute the audio from the receiver instead of your TV. Your television's speakers should not be in use at any point during normal playback under this scenario, so muting them would not accomplish the goal.

    • 3). Turn off the sound within the program you're using to play your video (if you are watching a video on a computer). Use the slider bar in the main video player window to completely shut down the audio in the program. This will leave only the video on screen. This is useful if you want to mute the audio from the video file but don't want to turn off all sounds in Windows.

    • 4). Mute all sounds in Windows (if applicable). If you're watching a video on your computer, click the "Speakers" icon in the task bar and draw the vertical bar as far as it will go downward. This will mute not just the audio from the video file but all of the audio on your computer as well, leaving only video.
