    • 1). Download the template as directed by the person offering the template. In most cases Web templates come zipped. Use any free unzip utility to open the file, such as 7-Zip or WinZip. The zipped file create a folder.

    • 2). Open the folder. Look for a file named "index.html." This is the homepage for the website. Double click that file. It will open in a Web browser.

    • 3). Examine the homepage in your Web browser. Notice that all images and links to other pages are intact. Web templates use relative paths, meaning that links to images and other pages are based on their relative location to each other. For this reason, you should not move or rename any files or folders.

    • 4). Right-click the "index.html" file. Select "Open With." Then select "Notepad" or any HTML editor you have. The file will open in Notepad showing only the code.

    • 5). Scan the code for the title of the page, located between the "<h1>" and "</h1>" tags. If you have difficulty finding the tag, click "Ctrl-F," type "<h1>" into the text field and click "Find Next."

    • 6). Highlight the words of the title, delete them and replace type your own title between the tags. Press "Ctrl-S" to save the change.

    • 7). Click on your Web browser showing the homepage. Press "F5" to refresh the browser. Notice that the title has changed.

    • 8). Go back to the code in Notepad. Look for the first <p> tag. Notice that the text between the "<p>" and "</p>" tags is the same as the first paragraph of content you see on the Web browser. Delete these words and replace them with your own.

    • 9). Add additional paragraphs to the page by placing your cursor after the last "</p>" tag. Press "Enter." Type "<p>" then type or paste the next paragraph after the tag. Type the closing </p> tag after the paragraph.

Press "Ctrl-S" to save the document after every change. Then refresh the browser window to see the results of the changes you made. Undo any mistakes by pressing "Ctl-Z."

Repeat the above steps for each page in the template. Make sure that if you type a new tag that you use the closing tag with a backslash, like "<p>" and like "</p>."

Upload the "index.html" file, and all sub-folders and files, excluding any "readme.txt" files to your Web server using your Web host's Web FTP service, or using their recommended FTP client software and settings.
