Genealogy is the method of researching information about your ancestors in order to help you create your family tree.
Using traditional methods you would have to research and find records that are often difficult to find and interpret, on the other hand there is a newer method called genetic genealogy which uses DNA testing.
Genealogists who use the traditional methods often have to travel to different countries in order to research information from libraries and archives to enable them to create the family tree they are working on.
However, there can be some problems with this method such as not finding the information they need, this equates to a lot of time being wasted and money being spent.
An alternative to this method is genetic genealogy, which many professionals are finding very promising and accurate.
Using Genetic Genealogy: The birth of genetic genealogy has come about because of the advancement in DNA techniques and knowledge.
This is giving many researchers a promising method of finding the missing links to a family tree.
From a scientific standpoint DNA shows that we all come from common female and male ancestors, so it's going to be interesting to see how this will help research.
Because this method uses medical science there is the benefit that using DNA samples will be more accurate when applied to ancestral research plus this research will also show a hereditary diseases which will help family members who are alive today.
This method should also benefit families and individuals who have been either adopted or been the adoptee, because genetic genealogy can easily trace who these individuals families are.
This will allow many individuals to be put in touch with their true family members.
Who knows, you may even find you are related to someone who is famous.
Now wouldn't that be something exciting to share with friends and neighbors and of course family Genetic Genealogy Has Two Types of DNA Testing:
  1. Mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA - is used in research to determining a maternal ancestor.
Therefore, if there are two people who are found with the same mtDNA, it is most probable that they have the same maternal origin.
Unfortunately, mtDNA slowly changes, which can make it difficult to identify close relatedness.
  2. Y-chromosome Tests - this type of genetic genealogy tests are being used more often in research.
This test is only apply to males because this chromosome is passed from father to son, and is therefore also used to identify ancestry if individuals share the same surname.
