How To Repair Wooden Gates

104 13

    Fixing Loose Hinges

    • 1). Set a level on the top horizontal rail of the gate. Lift up on the latch side of the gate until the bubble in the indicator is centered. Prop the gate at this height with scrap lumber.

    • 2). Tighten the bolts in the hinges with a nut driver and cordless drill for lag bolts. If your bolts run through into nuts on the reverse side, hold the nuts in position with a wrench or locking pliers and snug the bolts down with the nut driver and drill.

    • 3). Replace stripped lag bolts with bolts at least 1/4-inch longer or slightly thicker. This will give more bite in the damaged bolt hole to hold the bolt snug.

    Resetting a Loose Post

    • 1). Open the gate until it is perpendicular to the fence. Place a level against the back of the gate post. Lift up on the gate until the bubble in the indicator is centered. Prop the gate at that height with scrap lumber.

    • 2). Dig out on the side of the post the gate swings to and the latch side with a sharp shooter spade to a depth of 12 inches. Set the dirt aside to fill the top of the hole.

    • 3). Fill the hole with dry concrete to a level 2 to 3 inches below grade. Add water to the hole and with a hose or from a bucket according to the label recommendations. Mix the concrete with a narrow piece of scrap lumber. Pack the dirt into the remaining space in the hole tightly to help hold the post in place. Leave the gate propped overnight to allow the concrete to harden.

    Installing a Lift Kit

    • 1). Attach the corner brackets of an anti-sag gate lift kit using the provided hardware. Install one bracket at the top of the hinge side and the other at the diagonally opposite corner at the bottom of the latch side of the gate. Follow the package instructions for precise placement and installation. Procedures vary from kit to kit.

    • 2). Attach the cable between the two corner brackets. They typically attach using a spring clip into an eyebolt. Attach the turnbuckle in the center of the gate between the ends of the cables you just attached.

    • 3). Close the gate so that the latch bolt is setting in its closed position. Tighten the turnbuckle with a wrench to lift the latch side of the gate until it lifts the latch bolt just barely clear of the bottom of the latch bracket. Open and close the gate to test its operation and adjust further if needed.
