How to Make a Simple Fire Pit
- 1). Gather large rocks and bring them to the location of your fire pit. You need enough to make a complete circle with as few gaps as possible. The larger the rocks, the better, but you can also use many smaller rocks if it is all you have.
- 2). Determine how large your circle will be depending on how many rocks you've found. Use a shovel to dig up the grass where you want your simple fire pit. The hole you dig up needs to be large enough to accommodate your fire area, plus the ring of rocks that will surround it. This creates about a 6 inch hole that will contain the fire, and keep it from spreading as the heat dries out the grass.
- 3). Place your rocks around the outside of your hole. They will "insulate" your pit to keep the fire from spreading. Start with the larger rocks, then use smaller rocks to fill in any holes or gaps in your ring.
- 4). Place kindling in the bottom of your pit and light it. As its fire grows, add more kindling and eventually some small sticks and branches. When the fire is stable, begin adding larger pieces of firewood to keep your fire going long in to the night.
