How to Replace the Computer Fan in a Dell Computer
- 1). Shut down the computer and unplug it from the wall. Ensure that all electricity is discharged from the internal capacitor by pressing down the power button for at least 10 seconds.
- 2). Loosen the screws that hold the outer casing to the internal tower. Slide the tower cover off by holding each side of the tower with flat palms and gently pulling the case away from the front side.
- 3). Locate the largest fan inside the tower. Disconnect the three-pronged power cord from the motherboard--it is typically marked with the word "fan" to avoid any confusion. Loosen the screws holding the fan onto the heat sink.
- 4). Place the new fan on the heat sink and align the screw holes. Tighten the screws finger tight. Plug the fan into the power source.
- 5). Plug the computer back into the wall outlet and turn it on. Verify that the fan is spinning freely.
- 6). Replace the tower and secure all screws.
