Halloween Decorations Made With Hay

    Scarecrow

    • Make a scarecrow using materials such as hay, clothes and twine. Fill a pair of denim overalls and a long-sleeved, plaid shirt with hay and place the shirt inside the overalls. Tie the ends of the sleeves and pants with twine but make sure that a bunch of hay sticks out for the hands and feet. Stuff a pillowcase with hay to create the scarecrow's head and tie the end with twine. Draw a face on the pillow with paint or markers. Attach the head to the body with safety pins and place a hat on the head to complete your decoration. Prop your scarecrow on bales of hay or wherever you can, or attach it to a wooden stake in an upright position with a hammer and nails.

    Witch's Broom

    • Use dry twigs and amounts of hay in the thickness that you desire for the broom and cut it to the length that you want. Find a long, thick branch for the broom handle. Wrap one end of the branch with the hay and use twine or aluminum wire to to hold the twigs and hay together. You can tie the twigs and hay in three locations 1 to 2 inches apart starting from the top. Use the witch's broom together with your other decorations as a prop for a witch or together with pumpkins.

    Halloween Wreath

    • Create a Halloween wreath using a grapevine wreath in the size of your choice. Make a loop around the wreath with wire or twine so that you can hang it. Insert bunches of hay and dry twigs in the wreath. Use twine, wire and/or a hot glue gun to attach different things to the wreath. Some of the things you can add are candy corn, plastic pumpkins, spiders, bats, skeletons and artificial spider's web. If you don't want to hang the wreath, prop it against the wall on top of a fireplace or on a console table.

    Pumpkin Bale

    • Instead of carving pumpkins for Halloween, use bales of hay that you can purchase from a pumpkin patch to create your own pumpkins. You can use bales of hay whether the bales are circular or rectangular in shape. Paint the entire bale of hay with orange spray paint. Use black spray paint to paint facial features on the hay, such as triangular eyes and a triangular nose and a mouth. Experiment with different facial expressions so that no two pumpkin bales look alike. Pumpkin bales can stand alone or you can decorate around them with real pumpkins and other Halloween decorations.
