How to Install the Bottom Seal on an Entry Door
- 1). Close the door and align a door-pin punch -- a specially designed tool for removing door pins from their hinges -- with the bottom of a door pin. Tap with a hammer to drive the pin up and out of the hinge. Repeat for each hinge. Slowly open the door enough to get a firm grip. With a helper, disengage the door from its adjoining hinges, and place it on a set of sawhorses or lean against a nearby wall.
- 2). Pry the existing sweep off with a slotted screwdriver, if it is attached by barbs that snap into grooves along the bottom edge of the door. Remove the screws with a screwdriver or screw gun, if the sweep uses screws to attach to the bottom of the door instead.
- 3). Clean the grooves on the bottom of the door to remove any debris. Match the new sweep to the bottom of the door and trim if necessary using a standard razor knife. Snap the new entry-door sweep into place. If the sweep installs with screws, use the screwdriver or screw gun to set the screws.
- 4). Hang the door, with assistance from your helper, by aligning the door hinges with the jamb hinges and inserting the pins. Use a hammer and gently tap the door pins until they are fully seated in the hinges.
