How to Care for a White Snowball Tree

    • 1). Plant your white snowball tree in a protected area where it will not be subject to harsh winter winds. Plant it where it will receive plenty of sun and where the soil is well drained.

    • 2). Dig a hole no deeper than the tree's root ball and approximately three times the diameter of the root ball. Place the tree in the center of the hole and press soil around it to the same depth that the tree has previously been growing. Water enough to settle the soil around the tree.

    • 3). Spread commercial mulch around the base of the tree to keep weeds at bay and to help retain moisture. Water only to keep the soil damp, but do not overwater. The snowball tree does not like its roots soggy.

    • 4). Spread a commercial garden granulated fertilizer around the tree in the spring, following the fertilizer manufacturer's instructions. Water the fertilizer into the soil and then water normally for the rest of the summer, keeping the ground just slightly damp. The snowball tree requires no further fertilization for the remainder of the year.

    • 5). Trim the tree in late summer when the blooms have dropped off. Remove any dead wood, much of the previous season's growth and trim for a pleasing shape.
