    Ice Rink

    • Take advantage of the season to ice skate outdoors. There are outdoor rinks that are only open in cold weather and they afford children a wonderful way to get out and play in a new environment. Look into group fares for skate rentals and choose a day when there will not be many other people at the rink. Take the children during a weekday when they are on winter break from school.

    Stringing Garlands

    • Winter is a tough time for birds that did not migrate and this activity allows the children to help the birds as well as have fun. Give each child a large plastic needle that has been threaded with a long length of yarn. Then allow them to thread popcorn and dried fruit onto the yarn, creating a tasty garland that can be hung outdoors. This is a quiet activity that suits older children and it is a good way to wind down the party.

    Summer in December

    • During December, it can be hard to remember the fun of summer, but this is where a summer in December party comes in. Tell the guests that its officially June in your home and that they should dress accordingly. Hand out tropical leis when the guests walk in the door and hand out water guns. When it is time for food, serve everyone on a picnic blanket on the floor and choose summer fare like fried chicken and fresh fruit.

    Treat Bags

    • There are many choices for a December party treat bag. For example, you can simply place Christmas cookies in a small paper bag or you may choose to offer each child a jar of cookie mix that she can bake with her parents.

    Soap Sculptures

    • Before the party, grate a large amount of white Ivory soap. Place the soap shavings in a bowl and when the time comes, pour a small amount of water into the soap until you can stir it with a spoon. Then allow the children to play with this fake snow and encourage them to make snowmen or other "snow sculptures." The soap will dry hard and the children can take their soap sculptures home.
