Who is The Marvin Watch Company?
The Marvin M104 comes from the Marvin Watch Company which perhaps few have heard of but which has been around since 1850.
Although available in 60 different countries, these watches are not yet available in the U.
S.
The Marvin Watch Company has produced official watch lines for air lines such as KLM and Air France and is headquartered in Switzerland.
Unique and original characteristics found on all Marvin watches are: a three-pointed crest engraved on the crown and clasp (which is an upside M that stands for the company's name), leather straps bordered in red and a red detail at the 8 o'clock position.
Sidenote: The Marvin crown is similar to the Rolex crown and the idea of inverting the "M" is similar to what Michele watches does for their logo.
Collections of Marvin watches include: Gent Mechanical, Lady Mechanical, Gent Quartz, Lady Quartz, White Mechanical, and White Quartz.
If you visit the Marvin Watch Company's website you can't help but notice a prominent picture of someone who once wore a Marvin watch and which the brand has chosen to highlight.
He's none other than Che Guevara, the Argentine that fought side by side with Fidel Castro when he took power from the U.
S.
-backed Batista in Cuba in 1959.
Che wore a Marvin watch during the Cuban Revolution and this simple fact could well explain why these watches have not been available for sale in the U.
S.
as grudges against Fidel are still well in place.
At some point Che gave his Marvin watch to his father and later it was found and placed in a museum in Cuba.
Anyway, back to watches and in particular the Marvin M104 which does feature similar yet modernized characteristics of the one that Che wore.
The Marvin M104 has a 41mm sized case made from brushed steel, while the lugs and around the bezel are polished steel.
The watch runs on an automatic movement and has 42 hours of power reserve.
The black leather strap has classic red Marvin stitching.
The hour markers and hands are coated in superluminova.
The watch is water resistant up to 50 meters.
The sapphire crystal is applied in a unique "Marvin" way; the crystal itself is flat, but around the edges it is faceted before being placed in the case.
This creates an additional point for which light is refracted off the watch.
The rear of the watch features a K1 mineral crystal on the caseback window allowing the wearer to look at the movement.
The M104 also has the seal of the company's founders engraved on the bottom left-hand side of the case.
The initials read "M & E D," which stands for Marc & Emmanuel Didisheim, the brothers that founded the company.
The M104 is a functional and good-looking watch that if sold in the U.
S.
would go for about $2,200.
Whether or not these watches will ever physically reach this country is another question.
