Scientific Name: Icterus galbula
Year Adopted as State Bird: 1947

The rich orange-gold and black plumage of the male Baltimore oriole is similar to the coloration of the Calvert shield, the emblem of George Calvert, the colonist who chartered what would become the state of Maryland, and the bird was designated as the official state bird in his honor.
Since 1894, the state has also been home the Baltimore Orioles major league baseball team, another point of birdy pride in the state.
