How do I Make Small, Powerful Electromagnets That Repulse Each Other?

    • 1). Cut the magnet wire in half using the wire cutters. It is important to use magnet wire and not any other type to make an electromagnet that is both small and powerful. This is because a magnet's strength increases as the amount of wire it uses increases. Magnet wire is thin, so a lot can be put into a small space.

    • 2). Sand the varnish off of each of the ends of the two wires using the sandpaper. Remove at least an inch of the varnish but do not sand the wire so thin that it snaps.

    • 3). Wind one of the wires around one of the horseshoes. Start at one end of the horseshoe and wind the wire all the way around the bend to the other end. Tape the wire in place with the electrical tape. Leave a few inches of unwound wire on both ends.

    • 4). Wind the other horseshoe with the other wire and secure it in place with electrical tape. Follow the same procedure as for the first horseshoe and wire.

    • 5). Connect each horseshoe to a battery. Fix one wire to the positive terminal and one to the negative terminal. Use the electrical tape to secure them.

    • 6). Hold the electromagnets so that the positive end of one is next to the negative end of the other. They will repel each other.
