Tips on Removing an Outdoor Faucet Packing Nut

104 31

    Turn the Water Off First

    • A tightened packing nut not only holds the inner workings of the outdoor faucet together, but it also helps stop water from pouring out of the faucet body, even when the faucet handle is turned off. Consequently, it is important to turn off the water to the faucet first before attempting to loosen and remove the packing nut. Locate the home's main shutoff valve and turn it off, then open the faucet and wait for all of the water to pour out of the pipeline.

Use an Adjustable Wrench Around the Packing Nut

    • First, attempt to simply loosen the packing nut. Open an adjustable wrench to the width of the packing nut and position the nut in the wrench's jaws. Hold the end of the wrench handle firmly and attempt to tun the wrench counterclockwise.

    Use a Pipe Wrench

    • Over time rust or debris can prevent the packing nut from loosening freely. If this proves to be the case, place a pipe wrench around the body of the outside faucet and hold the pipe wrench's handle securely in one hand. Then attempt to turn the adjustable wrench counterclockwise around the packing nut. If the nut still won't loosen, move on to the lubricating spray.

    Apply Lubricating Spray

    • First, scour both ends of the packing nut with a wire brush to remove all rust and debris. Then apply lubricating spray all around both sides of the nut. Wait 15 minutes for the spray to seep between the inside of the nut and the thread it attaches to. Place the pipe wrench around the faucet's body and the adjustable wrench around the packing nut as before and, while holding the pipe wrench, turn the adjustable wrench counterclockwise to loosen and remove the packing nut.
