DIY Wall Deco
- 1). Choose the fabric. Whether the pattern is big and splashy, simple and geometric or textured, pick the color to coordinate with those you already have in your room. Fabric like Batik contains a variety of rich and vibrant colors brought together in incredible patterns that strongly resemble oil or watercolor paintings. Take a paint sample with the color of your walls, as well as swatches of potential upholstery, drapes or pillows, so the fabric you choose will tie all the colors together. The fabric you choose needs to be at least 6 inches larger than the frame.
- 2). Choose the wood stretchers. Most local craft stores have wood frames for stretching canvas. They are notched and angled so the corners fit together tightly. Decide what size and how many frames you want to make. Purchase the appropriate-size wood pieces.
- 3). Assemble the wood frames. Place the corner of the wood pieces together and gently hammer them until tight. Continue until all four sides are complete.
- 4). Lay out the fabric upside down on a flat surface. Iron out the wrinkles. Place the wood frame on the fabric so enough fabric extends along the edges to wrap around the frame. Starting in the center of one side, staple the fabric to the frame. Place one staple in the center of each side of the frame, gently pulling the fabric until taut but not stretched.
- 5). Finish stapling the fabric onto the frame, alternating sides and gently pulling the fabric until you reach the corners. Fold the corner fabric as if you are wrapping a present, and staple in place. Trim fabric that extends past the inside of the frame. Attach picture hanger to center of upper side of frame. Hammer a nail into the wall and hang your new piece of art.
