Types of Christmas Backdrops in Theatres

Christmas- Everybody loves the Christmas season, and it's a time to kick your feet back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
Theatre productions play a big part in Christmas, and the backdrops are no different.
A good Christmas backdrop for a play can make the difference between something you watch and like, and something you watch and dislike.
There are many things you need to consider when doing a Christmas backdrop.
First of all what type of Christmas play is it.
Does it include Santa Claus, in which case an elf workshop could be appropriate? Or does it include a child finding the true meaning of Christmas, in which case you will need to think slightly more about what you will do on your backdrop.
Colors play a big part in a Christmas backdrop.
Traditionally red green and gold are the main Christmas color, so you could use these together to get a great Christmas affect.
Alternatively why not experiment using other colors, maybe a blue or an orange? Try and make your backdrop stick out form everyone else's.
Will you be using a main image? If the main theme of the play is about Santa Claus it would make sense to get a backdrop related to him.
Or maybe you're acting out the Christmas story in which case it could be a good idea to have the whole backdrop as a barn, so all you need is the actors and you have a fantastic looking Christmas backdrop already.
Perhaps you would like to have the main background as a field of snow to set the Christmas scene or perhaps a frozen lake to symbolize the coldness.
Whatever you choose make sure you put thought into it, and make sure it directly relates to the play.
Christmas trees are obviously one of the most famous Christmas decorations around, and children and adults alike love them.
Think about placing a Christmas tree in the backdrop or even the foreground, if you can find a use for it.
It will help emphasize the Christmas feeling, and could incorporate in your play as well.
Put some nice decorations on it, and light it up if it's an actual Christmas tree and not painted on.
Don't be afraid to try weird things and wacky decorations, what seems like an accident at first could turn out to be a great look for your play.
So as you can see there is a lot to think about when designing a Christmas backdrop.
Everything from color, to types of Christmas tree you need to think about everything and make sure its relevant to the effect you want.
Remember to discuss with the cast and team what they think, listen to their ideas and respect them.
Suggest what you think would look good, and if someone doesn't like the idea try and compromise with them.
Remember the more time you put into making a Christmas backdrop the better it will look, so take your time and let your creativity flow.
