With the competition for good jobs so fierce and the number of applicants skyrocketing, you need to stand apart from the crowd.
You can't afford to blend in with the mass of co-applicants.
You need to be a "pattern interrupt".
You may already have read my article giving the first strategy.
This one works in tandem with that strategy.
Learn your core Drives, Needs and Aptitudes ("DNA").
You are most valuable to any employer when you're doing what flows naturally from your "DNA".
The key to standing above the crowd is getting very clear about your unique value and communicating how it can benefit the prospective employer's business.
Rare is the candidate who can do this.
The other candidates will highlight their education and prior job experience on a plain vanilla resume instead.
There are many tools that try to help you identify your strengths.
But you also need to understand how you shape your life experience.
Did you know that you consciously observe only a microscopic percentage of data bombarding your senses every minute? What you choose to observe is different than anyone else.
Your filters shape how you experience life and respond to what you take in.
Some of these filters came with you at birth (e.
g.
drives and needs) and some are developed (e.
g.
beliefs and fears).
Your core drives strongly influence how you experience the world.
Are you driven to have power over your environment and to make things happen? Or are you driven to have fun and to feel happy in the moment? Are you driven to have order in your life? Or are you driven to have peace and balance that comes from living as much as possible away from conflicts, opposition, confrontation etc.
? Are you driven to connect deeply with others emotionally? Each drive has a major influence on what are your needs and you want to look for a job that fulfills many of these needs in order to be happy.
Those who are aware of their cores set of drives, needs and aptitudes will land better jobs because they will come across as more authentic and go after only those jobs where they naturally excel.
The book, The DNA of Successful Leaders: Tapping Your Natural Power to Win Friends and Influence Others, can help you identify your drives and needs.
