How to Graphic Design a CD Cover

104 37
    • 1). Measure the CD case. Even if you opt to create a larger format and then plan to make it smaller, you need to ensure that the artwork will fit the CD case in terms of proportions.

    • 2). Brainstorm for ideas based on the theme of your CD. For example, if you wish to create a CD of a classical string quartet, your graphic design ideas need to reflect this. Additionally, in your brainstorming sessions, you should consider what kind of design tools you'll use. For example, you can choose a high-end program, such as Adobe Photoshop, or opt for something more accessible to the average user, like Microsoft Publisher. Each has its own advantages and restrictions.

    • 3). Make sketches of your CD cover ideas. Consider your theme, what type of CD you're making, the audience you want to reach and the principles of design. Creating several sketches allows you to see new possibilities as well as the weaknesses in your ideas so you can correct them.

    • 4). Take any photographs required to complete the project, or download stock photos from a CD if you've opted to use this kind of image.

    • 5). Make any illustrations you require for your CD art. For both photos and illustrations, you'll have gained some idea of the types of graphics you need during your sketching exercises.

    • 6). Add the background design elements to your base page. In graphic design, when you create a piece of artwork, you typically build it from the bottom up. This means you create the background first, then add graphic elements such as photos and illustrations, and finally add text on the top.

    • 7). Insert your graphics and adjust their size if they are too large. Follow the directions that came with the software to complete this step.

    • 8). Add text. Make sure that you've selected a font that's easy to read. Additionally, some fonts get lost if you place them over a photograph, because the background is inconsistent. If you run into this, consider placing a drop shadow or a text box behind the text.

    • 9). Put the finishing touches on the CD cover and print it off.
