How to Prevent Wrinkles. What Causes and How to Prevent Wrinkles on Your Face.
There are many reasons why are skin ages - genetics, diet, sun exposure, environmental toxins, tobacco, alcohol, stress and nutrition all play a part. As we age our skins oil glands reduce their production making the skin dryer and more prone to wrinkles. Also the skin starts to thin around the age of 40 - so any damage to the skin is more easily visible. Think of it like a mattress on a bed - as its used over the years the mattress thins our and loses its plumpness - so the springs become visible and lumpy. Our skin collagen and elastin supplies are diminished, so our skin losses its firmness and elasticity. To exacerbate the problem, as you age our body loses its ability to repair free-radical damage, so the changes in our cells and their expression becomes more pronounced.
However, there is still a dramatic difference between our skin that is exposed to the elements and that which isn't - you just have to look behind your ear to see you skin as it used to be - unblemished and soft. So this process isn't inevitable and there are things you can do to reduce the damage to your skin.
How to prevent wrinkles.
Nutrition: A diet full of fruits and veggies, which contain antioxidants will give your skin a better defence against environmental damage, and obviously will help your general health as well - which in turn will help your skin. Your skin is the last part of the body to receive any nutrients that you have eaten, so if your skin is healthy looking you know that your other vital organs are receiving the vitamins and nutrients they require.
The sun: There is nothing more ageing to the skin and more damaging than sun exposure. However, exposure to the sun is good for us healthwise - as it is the only way we can produce Vitamin D - so some sun exposure is necessary. But just ensure that you are wearing a good quality suncreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays - even when it is not €sunny'. And limit your exposure - especially in the middle of the day when the sun is at its most forceful.
Sleep: When you don't get good quality sleep, the body produces to much cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. However, when you are sleeping well, your body produces HGH (Human Growth Hormone), which helps keeps your skin thick and healthy. Also try to sleep on your back to avoid the pillow crease lines - which we have all had in the mornings!
Water: Aim to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day to helps your skin maintain it's moisture and elasticity. Water also flushes out harmful toxins so helps to keep your skin clear and youthful looking.
Moisturise daily: Use a good quality anti-oxidant moisturiser to keep your skin supple and soft, and to help repair the damage done by oxidative stress to the skin which we get daily.
