Mandatory Signs for Underground Mining

Mine safety officers place underground mining signs for the sole purpose of eliminating serious injuries and fatalities. They should ensure that all personnel working in an underground mine understand the expectations and meaning of all barricades and signage erected in the mine and to specify responsibilities for the access, use and removal put in an underground mine.

The following are some of the mandatory signs in an underground mine:

a) Danger sign

This is black, red and white in color. A danger sign usually limits or prohibits access to restricted areas.

Some safety officers normally place specific instructions at the back to explain the protocols. Some of the danger and protocols may include:

· No entry sign - this warns that there is immediate danger beyond the barricade. Some of the dangers may include fall of ground, quarantined equipment and scene of incident. The only people allowed beyond them are mine managers, shift managers and project managers. One of the officials with access to the area beyond must fill details about the reasons for erecting it in a register or report book.

· No unauthorized entry sign

Mine safety officers place this when there are open holes below or above, persons working above or below and unsupported ground. Individuals permitted to go beyond this point must seek permission from the shift manager.

· Charging in progress danger sign

Operators of charging equipment must place this 10 meters from the equipment

· Charged face danger sign

You should place this 10 meters from the unattended charged face

· Firing in progress danger sign

The shows that there is connection of the firing line and detonator.

· Remote bogging taking place danger sign

The only person allowed to put up this is the remote bogging operator

b) Caution sign

They are black and yellow in color and warns underground mine workers of any hazards. This type of does not limit entry to an area. Mine personnel can use them in the following cases:

· When there are trip hazards

· Equipment starts automatically

c) Safety signs

They are blue and white in color and requires any person going into specific areas of the mine to wear specific safety gears. Such gears include:

· Hearing protection

· Foot protection

· Eye protection

d) Safe condition signs

Safe condition signs are green and white in color. The sign designates safe services and areas in the mine. They may include:

· Escape routes

· First aid

· Fresh air base

e) Location signs

Location signs are blue and white in color. They normally provide descriptions of locations within the mine. Such areas include:

· Pump stations

· Main magazine

· Levels and locations

Mining companies can have more signs than the mentioned ones but the additional ones should have detailed procedures describing the signs, when to use them, access requirements and the individual to erect them. Persons allowed to hang the signs that restrict or prohibit access hang them 1.5 meters above the floor, hung on 6 millimeters chains, clean and readable and hung at the center of the excavation.
