When trying to get rid of gout, you would want to get rid of symptoms as well as the underlying condition.
There are three ways to get rid of gout, and these are by using alkaline agents, inflammatory drugs and topical ointments.
Alkali: Alkali is an ionic salt with pH levels greater than 7.
This substance has the ability to neutralize acids and therefore get rid of gout.
Gout is caused by the over-production of uric acid in the body.
When uric acid is concentrated (especially when the body is dehydrated) it accumulates in the joints, forming crystals that cause major gout symptoms such as intense pain, swelling and warmth.
It is therefore a good idea to neutralize these acids to prevent future gout attacks.
Alkali can come from food or in capsules.
Alkaline foods are known to get rid of gout.
A healthy diet consists of 65 percent alkaline content.
Moderately alkaline fruits are apples, fresh apricots, berries, blueberries, cherries, cantaloupe, eggplants, grapefruits, guavas, lemons, limes, loganberries, mangoes and melons.
Vegetables include bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, cucumbers, kelp, leek and lettuce.
Fruits and vegetables that are very high in alkaline are bananas, avocados, blackberries, almonds, cranberries, raspberries, plums, peaches, spinach and carrots.
Other high-alkaline foods include garlic, ginger root, figs and prunes.
Anti-Inflammatory drugs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, are designed to relieve symptoms of gout such as pain, redness, swelling and hot flushes.
Here are common NSAIDs and their usage:
  • Probenecid - is a NSAID used to flush away uric acid and therefore taken to get rid of gout.
  • Sulfinpyrazone - acts to lower uric acid levels in the body.
  • Allopurinol - is also a NSAID that inhibits the overproduction of uric acid.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used to get rid of gout as well as for prevention.
These drugs can be used for 6 to 12 months.
Here are more NSAIDs that can either be purchased over the counter or need a doctor's prescription (chemical names):
  • Iboprufen
  • Naproxen
  • Flurbiprofen
  • Etodolac
  • Meloxicam
  • Tolmetin sodium
  • Indomethacin
  • Sulindac
  • Diflunisal
Topical ointments: To get rid of gout symptoms and the pain caused by them it is best to directly apply medication on the affected area.
Ointments, creams and lotions may not treat the underlying condition, but can relieve pain and discomfort in the meantime.
Below is a list of herbal remedies that may get rid of gout symptoms:
  • Bryonia alba - is used to relieve the tearing and stinging sensations of gout symptoms.
