How to Learn Disability Qualifications for SSI
- 1). Turn on your computer and open the web browser.
- 2). Enter the address http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10029.html/ into the URL bar. This is the Social Security Administration website.
- 3). Scroll down the page to find information regarding the application process.
- 4). Read the first section called "Disability Benefits."
- 5). Read the section entitled, "Who can get Social Security disability benefits?"
- 6). Scroll down to the "Who decides if I am disabled?" section and read.
- 7). Open the link entitled "List of Impairments" to see if your medical condition is on the list or if it is equivalent in severity to an impairment that is on the list. If your disability is on the list, you will qualify automatically for full benefits under the law. Otherwise, Social Security officials must decide whether your disability is equivalent in severity to a listed disability.
Your disability must be total and expected to last at least one year. Further, if you are working in 2010 and your earnings average more than $1,000 a month, you generally cannot be considered disabled.
