Where Is the Lockbox?
During President Clinton's second term (following his federal fiscal reform) a primary talking point for him along with his Republican legislative enablers was to highlight the lockbox.
This was the vessel to be used by our government for depositing the Social Security surplus.
Financial reform lasted almost as long as President Clinton's personal conduct rehab.
Now in 2010, once again we're facing twins from different mothers.
The first offspring is the twin who believed something of real value was being placed into Bubba and the boys' lockbox.
It was revealed somewhere past midnight this past Saturday that in the last quarter Social Security disbursements exceeded revenue from Social Security tax.
This is truly distressing news! It is the reason the information was delivered by the government midnight rider on Saturday.
Even then the release was a mistake because the propaganda department was under the impression that federal Postal Service had already suspended Saturday delivery.
The administration and Congress, with information supplied by one of the many unaccountability commissions, had been led to believe it would be at least 2016 before we experienced this phenomenon.
Now that it's here the primary question should be, where is that lockbox? The few who care do not have strong convictions that its space is occupied by anything other than federal gas.
Social Security could be symbolized by the British Petroleum Oil well disaster.
Instead of petroleum flowing out it is social security payments.
While everyone is busy jumping and blaming the parties involved with the drilling accident no one is addressing yet how to plug and manage Social Security.
The damage to the Gulf Coast and its people is extremely sad.
Unfortunately the sheer magnitude of changing to a sane dispersal policy with Social Security will also be a coast-to-coast happening with resulting effects felt for generations to come.
Our president in trying to protect grasshopper nation has declared he is taking responsibility for the oil spill disaster.
When fear and panic take over leadership the first action is always to revert to what they know best.
The administration is now using a play refined by legislative hearings that has served as a winner this decade.
It is the famous "grab somebody else's money".
Backed by the entire federal machinery he is demanding $20 billion be placed in a fund to be managed by the government or some of its closest friends.
It will be dispersed in the future when needed.
This sort of sounds like that Social Security entitlement program.
The only difference is this twin is taking from the few; the other twin was fed by the many.
Now, Bubba, since both twins need to see and use what's in that lockbox, where is it? Unconventional wisdom tells us when dealing with a situation so tragic it is better to laugh than cry.
Plan for the worst - pray for better!
