How to Tile Uneven Floor
- 1). Pour floor leveling compound over all cracks, low areas or gaps in the subfloor. Pour the compound on very slowly, so it just fills the depressions without rising up out of them. The compound should level itself out immediately. Let it dry for a full day.
- 2). Divide the floor's surface into four quadrants, by snapping two intersecting lines over it with a chalk snapline, from the middle of each edge of the floor to the middle of the edge across from it. Use a square to make sure the lines are 90 degrees off of each other.
- 3). Apply thinset mortar over the center of the floor, at the intersection, with a notched trowel. Spread it over several square feet. The lines will still be visible through the mortar.
- 4). Set four tiles in place in the mortar, along the lines where they form the intersection. Put spacers between the tiles as you lay them. Build out from the middle of the floor toward the edges, adding more mortar as needed.
- 5). Cover the whole floor. Cut tiles around the edges as needed, using your tile cutter.
- 6). Let the tiles set for at least 12 hours. Remove the spacers.
- 7). Apply grout over the tiles using a grout float. Start in the corner farthest from the entrance. Press the grout into the spaces while scraping it off the surface. Wipe up the excess grout with a damp sponge.
