How to Plan Wall Tile

104 38
    • 1). Measure the wall where you want to install tiles. Get the height to where the tiles will end, the width and any lengths of open edges or areas for borders.

    • 2). Mark off a section of graph paper to scale with the measurements of your wall. Indicate each square of the paper to equal 2 inches. For example, if you wall measures 72 inches long, mark off 36 squares on the paper. Tape two or three sheets together if necessary, and use separate sheets of paper for each wall and each detailed wall section.

    • 3). Locate the exact center of the wall on your graph paper and mark it. The first tile laid, and the first tile drawn, should be in the bottom-center of the wall. All other tiles will move out from this spot with cut tiles being placed on the tops and edges of the wall.

    • 4). Experiment with different sizes of tile and different orientations, by drawing them on the graph paper. Draw the tiles on an angle, offset or straight, to see how many will fit in the area.

    • 5). Place pieces of blue painter's tape on the wall itself where you would like to see a border or decorative tile. Stand back from the wall and move the tape accordingly until you find the height or location to be exactly what you want. Pencil this in on the graph paper for a complete template to use when tiling the wall. Make sure to indicate on the paper the exact heights and locations of any decorative tiles to refer back to.
