How to Connect a Fluorescent Fixture to a Power Outlet
- 1). Identify the wires coming from the ballast of the fluorescent fixture. One wire should be white and the other black.
- 2). Unscrew the polarized replacement plug. There should be a channel on each side of the plug that the wires will fit into.
- 3). Determine if your replacement plug has screws attached to each prong or if you just lay your wire in the channel where a metal tooth will pierce the wire on closing.
- 1). Clip any bare wire off with the scissors.
- 2). Slip the white, neutral wire into the wide prong side of the replacement plug.
- 3). Slip the black, hot wire into the narrow pronged side of the replacement plug.
- 4). Close the replacement plug and tighten the exterior screw.
- 1). Bare 1/2 inch of copper on both wires. Cut through the plastic only all the way around the wire. Pull the plastic off the end with the back of the knife blade leaving the copper exposed.
- 2). Slide the white, neutral wire into the wide prong side of the replacement plug.
- 3). Slip the black, hot wire into the narrow pronged side of the replacement plug.
- 4). Twist the bare wire around the interior screw and tighten the screw trapping the wire. Repeat for the second wire.
- 5). Close the replacement plug and tighten the exterior screw.
