To make a tossed nine-patch quilt, you will need enough fabric to complete the project, the right tools for the job, and helpful sewing notions to pull everything together. You won't need a pattern; nine-patch quilts of all types are made by cutting and piecing strips of fabric. The tools you need can be found in any craft or sewing store. Tools are items essential to complete a sewing project but don't become a part of the project themselves. Notions will be found wherever sewing supplies are sold and will be incorporated into the actual project.

    Fabric

    • You will need a total of 3 yards of fabric in assorted colors for the tossed nine-patch quilt front. Use a mixture of colors to create your blocks in the classic nine-patch style. You will also need 3 yards of backing fabric for the quilt back and a queen-size quilt bat in either cotton or polyester. Choose fabrics that are 100 percent cotton for best results; also, choose colors and patterns that complement each other well.

    Tools

    • You will need tools to cut, sew, and press your tossed nine-patch quilt. A rotary cutter and mat are essential for accurately cutting the strips used to make the nine-patch blocks. A sewing machine is the easiest tool to use for assembling your blocks, but you can use a needle and thread and stitch them by hand if you prefer. An iron and pressing mat or ironing board are useful for pressing your blocks before final assembly. Pressing your seams allows you to have a well-defined, professional looking quilt.

    Notions

    • Choose a good quality cotton quilters thread for sewing and quilting your piece. You'll need several spools totaling about 1,000 yards to complete a queen-size tossed nine-patch quilt. Pins are useful for attaching blocks before sewing and for holding the layers together as you quilt. Adhesive spray is optional but can help you hold large pieces of fabric together for assembly.
