Partners of Addicts - 4 Steps For Coping With Life With the Addict

103 42
Being the partner of an addict is far from easy.
It is likely that your partner will not be fully available to the relationship when his or her priority is getting the next high or drink.
In addition, it is common to try to manage the partner's behavior and contain the various crises that occur as a result of the using.
Unfortunately, this action only perpetuates the system that enables the addict to keep using - he or she knows that you will be there to pick up the pieces, so the addict doesn't face consequences and is not forced to take responsibility.
Meanwhile, it is common for the partner's resentment to grow and even more efforts to control the addict's behavior emerge.
It is important to take good care of yourself when you are involved with an addict.
Here are 4 steps to coping: 1.
Take care of yourself physically.
Eat healthy foods, avoiding highly processed and sugar laden foods.
Take vitamins and supplements as needed - a naturopath can put together a supplement plan that is tailored to your specific needs.
Fish oil and food based multivitamin is a good start for many people.
Start a doctor approved exercise regimen, focusing on cardio workouts, as these release endorphins and help elevate mood.
2.
Join a support group of people who understand what you are going through.
Groups such as Al-Anon can be excellent sources of support and information to help you cope with your situation and find comraderie with people who genuinely grasp your struggles.
3.
Talk things out with a counselor who specializes in addiction issues.
Having a trained professional to help you work through your own issues and emotions surrounding your relationship can be invaluable.
4.
Take time to focus upon your own needs, dream, and desires.
Take your eyes off managing your partner's life, and start thinking about your own.
Spend time and energy on your own aspirations and goals.
